The Area
Iden is a Domesday village, with a twelfth century parish church, cricket green, village shop and local pub. Set in the heart of the East-Sussex countryside on the High Weald there are footpaths heading out in most directions from the village that will take you on a variety of beautiful country walks. More serious walkers can use Iden as a good base to join several long distance paths, such as the Saxon Shore Way, the 1066 Country Walk, the High Weald Landscape Trail and the Royal Military Canal Path.
Although it’s small and peaceful Iden is only two miles north of the ‘Atient Towne’ of Rye, one of the finest of the twelfth-century Cinque Ports along England’s southern coast. Rich in history and incredibly picturesque, Rye has been a haven for visitors for centuries. Henry James lived here; and Captain Haddock has a memorial stone in the old parish church! Today, modern restaurants, antique stores and sweetshops combine with local food shops, country clothing emporia and an excellent bookshop to welcome residents and visitors to a living town.
